This research was conducted to describe the ability of fourth year students of English Department at UMMY Solok at 2017/2018 Academic Year in using definite and indefinite articles. The researcher found some problems of the students in using definite and indefinite articles. The students were still confused in using definite and indefinite articles.
Research method that was used in this research was a descriptive quantitative design. The population of this research were all of the fourth year students of English Department at UMMY Solok. The sample of this research were 10 students. The samples were taken/choosen by using total sampling technique, Instrument that was used in collecting the data was grammar test.
The result of this research shows that in using definite article 30% of students got excellent, 50% of students got good, 10% of students got sufficient, 10% of students got bad and 0% of students got fail. It is found that there were 50% students (the highest percentage) who got good. It means that, the classification of students' ability in using definite articles is at good level. The result of this research in using indefinite article showed that 30% of students got excellent, 40% of students got good, 30% of students got sufficient, 0% of students got bad and 0% of students got fail. It is found that there were 50% students (the highest percentage) who got good. It means that, the classification of students' ability in using definite articles is at good level. It is suggested for the next researcher to conduct similar research which discuss other skills.
