Abstract

Writing is one of the basic components in learning English Writing is an activity to write something in written form. The problems faced by the students in this research are; first, the students were difficult to organize and develop the idea. Second, the students got difficulties to find appropriate evidence to support the essay. Third, there was no coherence in students' essay. This research has purpose to describe students' ability in writing coherence of persuasive essay at the second year students of English Department Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin Solok. It has two indicators, they are coherence devices and textua: features of coherence.

This research presented descriptive quantitative research. Subject of this research was the second year students of English Department Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin Solok. There was one class who taken course Essay Paragraph Writing. They are consist of 5 students. This research used total random sampling to take the subject of the research. This research used test as instrument and it consist of five topic persuasive essay. In this research the students were asked to choose one topic and asked them to write persuasive essay.

In this research, the research found the students' ability in writing coherence of persuasive essay at the second year students of English Department of Universitas Mahaputra Muhammad Yamin Solok was fair score with average value of the students only 2,3 (fair). It can be seen based on the two indicators, first was coherence devices with average score was 3,0 (good). Second was textual features of coherence with average score 1,8 (fair).
