Abstract

The background of this research was the students have low ability in mastering grammar especially in using subject verb agreement in simple present tense. The students cannot use the subject-verb agreement and usage, it is known that the ability of the students in using Simple Present Tense was low. The aimed of this research was to know the students' ability in using subject verb agreement in simple present tense at seventh grade of SMP N 2 IX Koto Sungai Lasi at 2016/2017 academic year.

The design of this research was descriptive research. The Population was the seventh grade of SMP N 2 IX Koto Sungai Lasi at 2016/2017 academic year, its total number was 68 students with the sample 22 students. The data of this research were taken by distributing grammar test. The students' score as the result of the test were analyzed and classified in form of A,B,C,D and E.

The result of the data analysis of students' ability in using subject verb agreement showed that the students' ability in using verb subject agreement was low. It can be seen on the research result, that there were 45% students' in bad qualification. It is found that in using plural verb. There are 36% students' in average qualification. In using singular verb the students' ability was low, there are 36% in bad qualification. Based on the result of this research, it is suggested to the grammar lecturers to pay more attention to the students in using subject verb agreement. For the students, it is suggested to learn and do more exercises. It suggested to the students to increase their ability in using subject verb agreement and for next researcher it is suggested to consider the result of this research in conducting the similar research on other skills.
