Abstract

This research was conducted on students class VIII and English teachers at class VIII SMPN 2 Kubung. This study aims to see what strategies are used by English teachers in class VIII of SMPN 2 Kubung in teaching reading comprehension in the 2019/2020 academic year. This research is a combination of qualitative and quantitative descriptive research in form at expost facto research design. The Primary data were obtained by using questionnaires and interviews which were distributed to the English teachers. The secondary data is taken from students' daily English exam results by observing the ones stored by the teachers.

The first instrument, the questionnaires were given to the teachers in order to know what strategies were used by English teachers in class VIII of SMPN 2 Kubung in teaching reading comprehension. The second instrument, interviews score applied and asked to the teachers to find out more about how often and how the use/implementation of strategies in teaching reading comprehension. The third instrument observation sheet was used to get the data on students' daily exam results each the time a certain strategy used by the teachers. It is obtained from the teachers' files to compare the students average scores in order to see how much the effect of each strategy used towards the students' reading comprehension ability.

Based on the results of the data analysis of this study, it can be concluded that there are eight strategies that have been used by the teachers during one semester in teaching reading comprehension. Among the eight strategies used by teachers, there are four strategies that are used dominantly. The first is Scaffolding with the average students' score of two teachers is 72.87. The second is contextual Teaching with the average students' score is 71.00. The third is Summarizing with the average students' score is 70.09, and the fourth is Discussion with the average students' score is 70.01. The four strategies showed the highest students' daily test results, because they are exceed the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English subject score that is 70,00. The other strategies. Semantic Mapping with the average students' score is 64, Think Aloud with the average students' score is 68.10, Monitoring Comprehension is with the avarage students" 61,75, and Question Answering Relationship (QARS) with the average students' score is 68.14. These strategies showed low student daily exam score, because they do not reach the Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM) of English subject score 70,00.

Based on the findings of this research it is concluded that the students' highest score on reading comprehension was taken after teaching by using Scaffolding strategy. So, it suggested to the English teachers in class VIII to use scaffolding strategies dominantly in teaching reading comprehension.
