Abstract

This research was conducted to describe the ability of Fourth semester students of English Education Department at UMMY Solok in the 2021/2022 academic year ability in translating.The researcher found several students' problems in translationcontextually and substitutionally .The students werestill confused and haddifficulty using contextual and substitutional proverb translation. The research method that used was descriptive quantitative. The population of
this study were all fourth semester students of English Department at UMMY Solok. The samples of this research were 14 students. Samples were taken by using total sampling. Then instrument used in collecting data was in the form of a test.
The results of this research shows that in using contextual 14.29% of students got excellent qualifications, 14.29%of students got good qualifications, 64.29% of students got fair qualifications, 7.14%of students got poor qualifications. It was found that there were 14.29% of students (enough percentage) who were moderately good qualifications. This
means, the classification of students' abilities in using contextual was good. The results of using substitutionally research show that 14.29% of students got excellent qualifications, 21.42% of students have good qualifications 42.9%of students got fairqualifications,21.42%of students got poor qualifications. This means that the clarification of students' abilities in using substitution lis at a fairly good level. It is suggested for researchers discuss other skills to conduct similar research, so that other students can develop their knowledge good.
