Abstract
This research aimed to analyzed code-switching used by English teachers in teaching at SMP N 1 Kubung. The background of this research was based on the problem raised from the teacher who when explaining the material in English,the teacher saw the confused facial expressions of the students and the students did not understand what was said by the teacher. The purpose of this analysis were to find out the types of code-switching and the factors that cause teachers to used code-switching in teaching English.
This research was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this research are 2 English teachers at SMP N 1 Kubung in the 2023/2024 academic year. The instruments used in this research were observation and interview. Observation was done to saw the code-switching types English during the teaching and learning process. In the interview instrument, the researcher gave 9 questions about the factors that cause teachers to used codeswitching in teaching English. In collecting data, the researcher used video recording.
The results of the research found 83 data, this research only focused on 40 code-switching data consisting of inter-sentential, intra-sentential, and tag switching. The intra-sentential type is the most frequently used type by both English teachers. The researcher also concluded that the factors of code-switching
used by the teachers shows that speakers often code-switch to gain "advantage" from their actions, the interlocutor, which can also be the cause of code-switching if the speaker needs to compensate for the interlocutor's language limitations. Thus, the existence of code-switching in SMP N 1 Kubung can be used as an understanding and facilitate teachers in the teaching process. In addition, teachers can adjust the needs of the class so that the material can be conveyed properly. The used of code switching is necessary, but it would be nice if students also learn to used a dictionary as a learning medium, so the students do not depend on the teacher.
