Abstract

This research was aimed to know the correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text at the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Kota Solok in 2019/2020 academic year. The research methodology used in this research is correlational research design in form of quantitative research. The researcher used cluster random sampling to get the sample.

In collecting the data, the researcher used vocabulary test and writing test. For vocabulary test, the resercher gave 30 multiple choice items and students could chose a, b, c, or d, as the correct answer on the answer sheet. In writing test, the students could be chosen one of the topics about descriptive text provided on the question sheet.

The finding of this research shown that there wasa correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text inhigh correlation with scored 0,89. It was mean that Ha (alternative hypothesis) was accepted. Therefore, there is a correlation between students' vocabulary mastery and their ability in writing descriptive text at the eight grade students of SMPN 2 Kota Solok in 2019/2020 academic year. From the research result, the researcher hopes this research can be useful for other researchers. Then, the students expectedto improve their vocabulary mastery and their writing ability.Furthermore, the teachersexpected to help the students to improve their vocabulary mastery and their writing abilityby using interesting methods, so that they are easier to learn it.
